Docu-mental
5th Mental Health Film Biennale

Participants of the 5th Biennale of Films on Mental Health and Neurodivergent People “Docu-mental” explore unconventional methods of improving psychological well-being, including searching for paranormal phenomena, corresponding with Vincent van Gogh and communicating through singing. In the process, they not only achieve a therapeutic effect, but also find an authentic identity. Their life strategies vary: from refusing medical institutions to voluntary participation in therapy, while maintaining autonomy in determining the boundaries of what is acceptable.

The program includes works from Europe, the Middle East and Asia, exploring the theme of authenticity and the conventionality of the concept of “mental health”. The films include an Oscar winner (Iranian animation), a Chinese-Singaporean melodrama nominated for the Un Certain Regard at Cannes, and a French documentary awarded at the Biarritz festival. The protagonists demonstrate behavior patterns that can be the subject of analysis and learning. The emerging empathic contact raises the question of the purpose of inclusive cinema.

The film screenings include discussions and debates with experts: psychologists, psychiatrists and psychotherapists, teachers and founders of inclusive organizations, artists and film critics. They will help to understand individual phenomena, talk about modern methods of adaptation of people with various characteristics and conditions, share personal and professional experience, and also help to more deeply comprehend the artistic experience of the authors whose films are included in the program.

The Biennale is supported by the Union for Mental Health.

All films are shown in their original language with Russian subtitles.
