Near the end of his life, following an emtional crisis, the painter Vincent van Gogh spent a year in a monastery in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, in a psychiatric hospital that is still active today. During this year he painted many of his most famous paintings.

The exclusively female patients that now stay there are offered a range of artistic therapies, and many of them spend their days like Vincent did – painting. Vincent wrote many letters from Saint-Rémy to his brother Theo and his sister Wil, and in this film the current patients answer him.

Where do they find consolation? In their paintings, with each other, with Vincent?

How can we make meaningful contact after language fails us?

In Kim Brand’s ‘Beyond Words’ the viewer is taken to a realm where language takes second place to improvised sound. The singers of the Genetic Choir Ensemble visit nursing homes and interact with residents living with dementia. The improvising singers show great sensitivity to the residents, who are at times extremely vulnerable. By listening and improvising with sound, rhythm, touch and melody, the singers seek connection with the elderly.

Moments of melancholy and cheerfulness go hand in hand in this short, black and white documentary that shows what singing can do when other forms of communication have been lost.
