Orpheus wakes to discover a priceless Caravaggio painting stolen from St. John’s Cathedral in Valletta while under his watch. With the city on edge, a young detective is brought in from Washington to aid the local police in solving the case.
A poignant mystery drama with an oscillating narrative structure, The Theft of the Caravaggio is the debut feature of writer-director Joshua Cassar Gaspar. The film had its world premiere at the Mediterrane Film Festival in June 2025 and stars Paul Kissaun (Black Mirror), whose performance earned him a nomination for Best Performance among a distinguished international line-up.
Shot on 35mm, the film is inspired by the 1984 theft of Caravaggio’s St. Jerome Writing in Malta. The Theft of the Caravaggio explores themes of deception and regret, placing the historic city of Valletta at the heart of its story.
