The central theme of the production becomes the absence of love within this "utterly incredible event." The director emphasizes the coarseness and spiritual emptiness of society's approach to the concept of "marriage," as well as the theme of the humiliating process of "matchmaking," the primary victim of which is invariably the bride. It is she who forms the conceptual heart of the play, with her longings and hopes for a grand and radiant love, for the certainty that she will meet that one beloved person. And what of the suitors? Each expects something entirely different from meeting her, and each expects his own thing. And what does the main contender for her hand and heart, Podkolyosin, seek? Will he be frightened by the sudden happiness that has fallen upon his shoulders, or will he not? We are to unravel all of this together in Yevgeniy Marchelli's production of "The Marriage".
