The title reveals the structure and essence. Six duets, brief encounters and long farewells: dramatic, comic, frantic, quiet, and tender. The ballet's synopsis can be summed up by the old wisdom of choreographer George Balanchine: "A man and a woman on stage already constitute a plot." In turn, the audience encounters new composers—none of them have written for ballet before—and these, too, are brief encounters with the hope of continuation.
