The power of stars.. can actors drive the success of films?

A panel discussion

20.30, Thursday, October 24, 2013,

GOGOL CENTER Moscow

Actors can be characterised as “stars” for a number of reasons: they may be blessed with critically acclaimed acting skills, have personality traits that appeal to the cinema-going audience, are able to attract a lot of free publicity, have the ability to secure investment for a film, or have simply been lucky.

But is the involvement of star actors critical for a film's success?

The complex, one-off nature of films makes it extremely difficult to test hypotheses about the factors driving success. Films are “complex creative goods” which are the result of creative teams working together, so it's worthwhile considering the role of a star in relation to the other cast members.

For instance, does a better lead actress result in a better performance from the lead actor? Is there really any truth in the adage that it's all about combining the right star with the right cast?

“Talent always rises to the top.” Is this statement true? How can an actor become valuable in the film industry? How are careers developed and sustained? In the age of increasing co-production, what is the difference between Western Europe and Russia?

This and other topics will be discussed by:
