Tomasz Konieczny
Opera singer, bass-baritone
Born in 1972 in the city of Łódź. He initially studied acting at the State Higher School of Film, then graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw in the vocal class and completed his studies at the Carl Maria von Weber Dresden University of Music.
He made his acting debut in 1992 in the film "Ring with a Crowned Eagle" by the famous Polish director Andrzej Wajda. He appeared on Polish television and in films and also worked as a director.
As a singer, Tomasz Konieczny made his debut in 1997 in the role of Figaro ("The Marriage of Figaro") in Poznań. In 1999, his international debut took place at the Leipzig Opera (the role of Kezal in Smetana's "The Bartered Bride").
He has performed on many European stages, including the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Zurich Opera, the Royal Danish Opera, the Paris National Opera, the Prague Opera, and others. In 2012, he first sang at the Salzburg Festival (the role of Stolzius in the premiere of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's opera "Die Soldaten"); in 2017, he made his La Scala debut (the Commendatore in "Don Giovanni"); and in 2019, he made his Metropolitan Opera debut as Alberich ("Das Rheingold").
Since 2006, Konieczny has been a regular participant in the Wagner festival in Budapest, where he has sung such roles as Amfortas ("Parsifal"), Wotan ("Die Walküre" and "Siegfried"), and Kurwenal ("Tristan und Isolde").
In 2018, he made his Bayreuth Festival debut as Telramund ("Lohengrin"). He has also performed there as Gunther ("Götterdämmerung") and Wotan ("Die Walküre").
His repertoire includes such roles as Procida ("I Vespri Siciliani"), Ramfis ("Aida"), Sarastro ("The Magic Flute"), Osmin ("The Abduction from the Seraglio"), Escamillo ("Carmen"), the four villains ("The Tales of Hoffmann"), Jack Rance ("La Fanciulla del West"), Orest ("Elektra"), Jochanaan ("Salome"), Barak ("Die Frau ohne Schatten"), Amfortas ("Parsifal"), Alberich, Wotan, and Gunther ("The Ring of the Nibelung"), King Marke and Kurwenal ("Tristan und Isolde"), the Dutchman ("The Flying Dutchman"), Telramund ("Lohengrin"), Janusz ("Halka" by Moniuszko), Zbigniew ("The Haunted Manor" by Moniuszko), Kaspar ("Der Freischütz"), the title role in Hindemith's opera "Cardillac," and others.
In 2019, the Vienna State Opera awarded the singer the honorary title of Kammersänger.
