Leonid Shmelkov

Animator, director, screenwriter

Born on July 5, 1982, in Moscow. He worked on various animation and film projects in Russia and Europe as a director, screenwriter, artist, and animator.

He directed several short animated films that were selected for numerous international festivals and received over 50 international awards, including the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) prize in 2014 and the Nika Award in 2015 (awarded by the Russian Academy of Cinematic Arts).

As an illustrator and designer, he has designed about 10 books. In 2015, he released his own series of children's books YBA ("ЫБЯ").

From 2019 to 2022, he taught at the SHAR School-Studio and supervised student animation projects at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow. Over the years, he has collaborated on various projects with organizations such as the Goethe-Institut, the Vera Foundation and Hospice, the Parovoz animation studio, International Memorial, the Riki Group of Companies, the DOC Theatre, the Big Animation Festival and studio, the Illuminator project, and others.
