Co-founder, artistic director, and choreographer of the dance-theatre company Peeping Tom
Gabriela Carrizo was born in 1970 in Córdoba, Argentina. She began dancing at the age of 10 at a multidisciplinary school, which at the time was the only one offering a contemporary dance group for children and teenagers. It was in Argentina that Carrizo created her first choreographic works.
At 19, Carrizo moved to Europe and over the following years worked with leading choreographers and theatre companies, while simultaneously continuing to develop her own projects – she created the solo piece "E tutto sarà d'ombra e di caline" and staged "Bartime" in collaboration with Einat Tuchman and Lisi Estaras. In 2002, she was responsible for the choreography of the opera "Wolf" in a production by Les Ballets C de la B. Gabriela Carrizo is not only a choreographer but also an actress: she played the lead role in the film "The Kid" (2012). In 2026, she made her operatic debut with a large-scale production of "Carmen" at the Salzburg Festival conducted by Teodor Currentzis.
In 2000, together with French choreographer Franck Chartier, she founded the company Peeping Tom in Brussels and has since served as its joint artistic director. That same year, the term "body theatre" was coined for the Peeping Tom company, defining its unique niche in the history of contemporary dance. The company's name is no coincidence. According to co-founder Franck Chartier, they chose this name because their creative method is to "peep" at people: how they eat, how they behave, what taboos surround them.
Each Peeping Tom production begins with hyperrealistic scenography – spaces that appear absolutely real (a nursing home, trailers, salons, basements) but gradually slide into surrealism. Critics note that Peeping Tom employs a distinctly cinematic language: the productions feature freeze-frames, accelerations, suspense, and a "widescreen" framing of the action through lighting and sets. Carrizo's experimental style is a blend of dance and theatre, of the everyday and the mysterious. The visual style of Peeping Tom has been compared to that of David Lynch: their surrealist aesthetic, their "troubling, dark yet sensual" worlds evoke direct associations with the films of the cult director.
Gabriela Carrizo's works have received two Laurence Olivier Awards. The first in 2015 for the production "32 rue Vandenbranden" in the category "Best New Dance Production", and the second in 2024 for "La Ruta", created for the Nederlands Dans Theater.
