Eric Cutler

Opera singer, tenor

One of the most sought-after "heroic" tenors of our time was born in 1975 in the small town of Adel, Iowa, and grew up in a farming family. Cutler himself ironically calls himself "the luckiest tenor on earth," because his career came together completely unexpectedly. He grew up in Iowa, where, by his words, "92% is farmland, and there's no opera theatre at all." His grandparents were farmers, and as a child he dreamed of becoming a "conservationist" (a specialist in nature conservation).

His path to opera began at 15, when a friend gave him a recording of an aria from "Tosca" performed by Pavarotti. Cutler was so shaken that from that moment he began secretly from his family traveling to the library in Des Moines to borrow recordings and study scores. And eventually, he confessed to his mother, showing her a "Three Tenors" concert.

Eric graduated from Luther College in Iowa, where his teacher was Ed Andereck, who "for fun" signed the 21-year-old up for an audition at the Metropolitan Opera – and he passed the "Lindemann Young Artist Development Program," and in 1998 won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2005, Cutler received the prestigious Richard Tucker Award.

His career began with bel canto and lyric repertoire (Mozart, Donizetti, Bellini), but gradually he moved into lyric-dramatic repertoire under the guidance of teacher Michael Paul. The turning point was Wagner's "Lohengrin" in 2018 at La Monnaie, after which Cutler established himself as a Wagnerian and Straussian interpreter.

He has performed on all the world's major stages: the Metropolitan Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, Covent Garden, the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, the Salzburg Festival, the Bayreuth Festival, La Scala, and many others.

As a true American, Eric Cutler compares singing to golf or baseball: "My great love since I was 15 is the sensation of an open operatic high note. It's like hitting a 350-yard drive straight down the fairway in golf, or hitting a baseball out of the park."
