Maria Linde (Krystyna Janda), a Polish Jew and a winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, lives in Tuscany. After a terrorist attack in Rome, the country witnesses public disquiet and the rise of anti-immigrant sentiments (it is worth remembering that the infamous Lampedusa island, a destination for many refugees who sail from the coast of Africa in search of a better life, is Italian territory). Maria decides to speak in support of the refugees and becomes part of an unpleasant public scandal.

The style of Polish director Jacek Borcuch reminds simultaneously of two Italian directors who love making films about bohemian lifestyle: Luca Guadagnino and Paolo Sorrentino. Borcuch tells Maria’s story intellectually, but also intelligently - which might be the reason why Krystyna Janda, the legendary figure of the Polish film industry, agreed to play the role. Throughout her career, Janda worked with some of the greatest Polish directors (Kieślowski, Żuławski, Wajda) and won the Cannes Best Actress Award.
