The film is based on the homonymous novel by Dostoevsy. After narrowly escaping death during World War II, a former soldier, Kameda, returns to Japan from a military asylum. He’s is branded an idiot because of his epileptic seizures caused by wartime experiences. During his journey he meets and becomes friends with Akama,  who  is returning to claim his dead father's fortune and marry Taeko,  hounded by a wealthy but cruel suitor, from childhood. Despised by women and treated as chattel by the other men, Taeko realizes that only childlike Kameda sees who she truly is, and  looks deep into her soul. Akama proposes to Taeko, but she delays responding. Akama jealously interprets this to mean that she is really in love with Kameda. His jealousy grows until he ultimately murders Taeko and both men go mad with grief.
